Spring’s Best

By Sá Shellard

‘You seek a motive for feeling,

find in your life, silence.

Another fate is revealed for me by mirrored time.

It is pain like death to see beauty

aflame now in other faces;

lost to me each innocent thing,

even this voice, enduring

in imitation of joy.’

(Imitation of Joy - Quasimoto)

The best of me hangs on the wire, shooting blanks into the typing pool, casting bets against the dreams of others — as if I myself don’t walk around with a sordid balance.

So this is the way of the world: you climb through the devil’s backbone, and wonder how he could possibly be working through you.

You follow along the blushed trails of servitude and find yourself splayed out on Love Lane, right where you began — except you’re a little older now and a little tired.

But, I suppose I shouldn’t fuss. The karmic procession is well on its way, and I’d rather lend a face to the sun than risk having a tuft of arrows rammed inside my throat.

In April, tears leapt from the sky. It was as if heaven’s cradle finally gave way to a child-like sensibility just in time to coronate the Spring Coming Queen.

I was then washed anew, galvanised by a jet-powered ache that purified my will and relieved me from spiritual prosecution.

In the end, you will be found. Green is the colour of victory and nature has a very funny way of kindling escape routes for those who dare to dream in colour.

With Love
