Party Jewell

By Sá Shellard

The body’s nodding,

still standing,

ready to fly straight out of itself—

or its bill-tilt, wing-flash,

topple-over; wing-droop, bowing,

tail-flick and drift;

back-ruffle, wingspread, quiver and soar.

Someone is troubled, someone is trying,

in earnest, to explain; to speak without

swallowing the tongue;

to find the perfect word among

so few or

the too many

(Cheer - Stanley Plumly)

Two Venus roamers, twirling violets back and forth, cast their nets against a world of pink — for one night only.

Sitting across from you now, with my knees wedged against yours, I think I’ll have myself a Summer’s Eve.

I thought, pleasure first, then all the rest. A ticking chest is a well-earned memento — a consolation prize for people who are good at parties.

I’m good at parties.

I put all my bets on you, July. You fluffed me out in heart-shaped corners and sent me off to charm and cheer, on account of a leoline aversion to ever really taking it easy.

I might take up tenancy inside a bubble, light-step through a world of inflatable goods, spill life into the ears of strangers, then ruminate on all that’s strange about me, until the shimmer thins and the world unravels beneath my feet.

Who knows where and how I’ll land...some might say I’m living desperately, but I like to think I’m desperately living.

I just need enough room to flutter, to be a courtly fool for a little while longer, stick with the whims of a British smoulder, and chance the chance of becoming a butterfly.

With Love,
